Resting IS Productive

There are two types of people in this world: those who think doing nothing (aka resting) is “wasting time” and those who believe rest is KEY to success.

The three biggest lies I told myself during my doctorate program were:

  • Resting isn’t productive.

  • Stillness helps no one.

  • If you’re not hustling, you’re FAILING.

Talk about an unhealthy mindset.

AND GUESS WHAT.

We, as a society, tell ourselves these things, too.

So, how do we manage this? Where do we start?

Let’s learn some stuff, friends.

Reality Check

It’s hard NOT to find accomplishment in the awards, success in the hustle.

It’s what we’ve been wired to do.

I’ve been there. Heck, I’m STILL learning how to manage it (no one is perfect).

During my program, anything that resembled stillness was just not enough for me.

I needed dopamine.

I needed constant stimulation.

What I actually needed was rest, recovery, and reflection

2021 has been a year for just that. I submitted my last final exam at the end of March, and the weeks that followed were a slow but steady cascade of events.

My hair began to thin, skin got really dry, and my sleep and menstrual cycles were 50 shades of f*cked up.

MY BODY WAS FALLING APART!

The sudden halt of planned-out quarters and social calendars was a wake-up call.

One look in the mirror on a cold April morning was enough to realize it was time to rest.

Time to be still.

Time to breathe.

But how? What’s the procedure?

Just that.

Give yourself permission.

Put down the to-do list.

Be still.

Breathe.
